Changes from Proto Attran (in order)[]

First Shift[]

  1. intervocalic h becomes ʔ
  2. vowels between ts, s, or x and ʔ become ə
  3. ə between consonants are lost
  4. tsʔ, sʔ, xʔ become ts', s', x'
  5. iː breaks into ji in unstressed syllables
  6. io and iä become jo and jä in unstressed syllables
  7. word final i is lost
  8. regular words derived from names beginning with l' have their initial click change to θ instead of ts or s
(the first instances of writing date back to just prior the second shift, mostly as pictograms)[]

Second Shift[]

  1. names derived from words beginning with θ begin with l' in all environments
  2. word final ä becomes ə
  3. ä between stops becomes ə
  4. intervocalic t, c, k, ts, s, x become d, ɟ, g, dz, z, ɣ
  5. intervocalic t', c', k' ts', s', x' become t, c, k, ts, s, x
  6. word internal unstressed tsj, dzj, sj, zj, xj, ɣj palatalize to tʃ, dʒ, ʃ, ʒ, ç, and the j in these sequences is is lost
