Allophony and Orthography:

  • Postalveolar fricatives /ʃ ʒ/ become retroflex /ʂ ʐ/ before back vowels /ɯ o/
  • <c> becomes /k/ in coda position.
  • The plosives and fricatives /t d ʃ ʒ/ become retroflex [ʈ ɖ ʂ ʐ] after /ɻ ɭ/, even at syllable boundaries.
  • /l ɹ/ become retroflex [ɭ ɻ] when syllabic
  • Before consonants, (including at word boundaries) syllabic [ɻ] can be written as <r> rather than <rr> as this is unambiguously syllabic. Before vowels, <rr> is used, e.g.

taar da [tɐɻ̩ ɖə] vs taarr allda [tɐɻ̩ æɭɖə]

  • Unstressed [æ ɪ] become [ə].
  • Unstressed [i] becomes [ɨ].
  • Unstressed [a] becomes [ɐ].

  • [ʊ] is reduced when unstressed, but does not change quality.
