Notes[]

  • Irurl sometimes occurs before certain consonants to form a retroflex consonant. These kind of consonants are known as guwinthil.
  • Ingup is pronounced [i] before Y; Ungup is pronounced [u] before W. For example, guwangil = [guwɑŋɪl]; giyutha = [gijʊt̪ɑ].
  • Unvoiced stops have no audible release when they occur as a coda. For example, umthik = [ʊmt̪ɪk̚]; yiktha = [jɪk̚t̪ɑ].
  • Fricatives are not present in this language, like most Australian Aboriginal languages.
  • The name "guwinthil" comes from the Mangurli word for retroflex.
  • The name "ukina" comes from the Hawaiian name 'okina
  • Irurl may be pronounced [ɽ] by some older speakers.
