Classification and Dialects[]

Naaq is commonly labelled as a language isolate, although its phonology is similar to that of Eskimo-Aleut languages.

Naaq has two dialects; Seitu Naaq (the normal form of Naaq) and Kuputei Naaq (the native form of Naaq spoken only by a small amount of the population). The lexicon will only have Seitu Naaq words.

Its name (pronounced NAHK) comes from the word that the natives of Naaqand used to refer to themselves; 'Nukei'. Scandinavians trying to claim Naaqand found that the uvular sounds would be hard to pronounce for some people, so they changed it to a 'k' sound. They also got rid of the 'ay' sound at the end for unknown reasons. The natives of Naaq call their language 'Nukeippu', meaning 'person talk',
